Museum & Music

After our walk in the Garden District, it was just starting to hit lunch and we hopped back onto the trolley and headed toward the Warehouse District! Stepping off at Lee Circle, we headed directly to the World War II Museum. 

We popped into this 1940s style soda shop for a sandwich and some coffee before heading to the museum’s galleries. I am a total history nerd and I loved how the museum showed both sides of the war, Road to Berlin and Road to Japan. They also had a dog-tag feature where you follow the story of a WWII soldier and I chose Geri Nyman, one of the first 25 WASPs – Women Airforce Service Pilots. She had such an interesting and amazing story (and yes, I absolutely chose her because she was a woman).We spent hours there watching, reading and soaking it all in. I even got myself a cute little string doll of a US Navy sailor from the museum gift shop to be my keychain!  

After the museum it was starting to be afternoon and we headed back to Canal via trolley and walked a bit. We found Ignatius from the Confederacy of Dunces and took some photos downtown. We headed back to the French Quarter and grabbed a late afternoon snack of beignets and coffee au lait at the famous Cafe Du Monde on Jackson Square. Earlier in the morning I bought a copy of the Times-Picayune (a self-confessed newspaper junkie) and took some time while we were waiting for our food to work on the crossword puzzle.

We walked around some of the shops and stores along the French Quarter. Some of the stores are absolutely gorgeous and have amazing dresses and jewelry that are sure to kill my budget. 😀 It was getting hot in the late afternoon and we loved the music that was played on the streets. There were still the bright colorful beads from Easter parades hanging from the trees, making the shops around Jackson Square so picturesque! 

We headed back to hotel and after taking a shower and nap, I felt all rested and ready to go! We headed out for a nice walk to grab dinner at Envie Espresso Bar & Cafe— a corner cafe with free wifi and a great mood, all while enjoying the street music and jazz from the nearby bars and clubs. We had a prosciutto and asparagus panini and hummus with pita making for a delicious evening snack! 

On our way back, we listened to the rhythm and music of the city with its beautiful lights that hung from the buildings. We stopped for a bit to sit on the curb with a small group of people to listen to a group of musicians playing on the sidewalk. It was so idyllic and almost reminded me a bit of New York but more relaxed and calm. There are so many quirky little places that sell everything from scarves to voodoo and it was so much fun to walk around, even in the evening when it was cooler than the daytime. By the time we got back to our hotel, it was still early but we fell promptly asleep, wrapping up our first day in New Orleans!
